The Sound of the Crowd

That was one of the saddest things I have ever seen

Eric Alterman, who I’ve mentioned here more than a few times, was a guest on Dennis Miller’s MSNBC show tonight. It was really weird and unpleasant to watch. Miller treated his invited guest the way a sulky adolesecent treats a chore he doesn’t want to do, like homework.

Miller shows no aptitude for–or interest in–whatchamacall…interviewing. I’d say they should let him concentrate on comedy and commentary, but judging from the opening, he’s lost the aptitude and interest he did once have for those things.

I used to like Dennis Miller. I used to like Dennis Miller a lot. From his first season on SNL to the first year or two of the HBO show, he was one of the best out there.

What happened? Forget whether I agree with him or not on Bush (if you’re reading this, you likely know I don’t) that was a shitty way to treat a “guest.”

I kept comparing it The Daily Show, where Jon Stewart manages to be civil and respectful to people even while openly disagreeing with them.

Maybe that’s why Stewart was on the cover of Newsweek and Miller’s on MSNBC.
