In terms of sheer syllabic girth, I Love You But I’ve Chosen Darkness is the 2003 version of …And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. Sound wise, though, instead of opting for that band’s Texan shit storm of noise, they set up shop with Spoon’s Britt Daniel and wrote songs of streamlined simplicity. It’s a kind of rural, rustic emo where the kids fall back on scads of angular guitar interplay and hedonistic rhythms, but also where the breakdowns actually end silently in wispy isolation. The result is a danceable, haunting soundtrack that’s more than a little evocative of Joy Division. This EP is a grand statement done in a thoroughly un-Texan way: short, uncomplicated, non-self-aggrandizing and nearly flawless.
