Look out, there! The folks in Hearse are very aggressive, churning out some pretty filthy and nasty sounding crust that will keep you raising your victory fist high in the air, hours after listening to Armageddon Mon Amour.
If you don’t know, Hearse is the latest project of former Arch Enemy vocalist Johan Liiva. His voice is scathing, scratchy and sounds as if it gurgles blood from time to time. He has one of the best death metal voices in recent memory, and what he does with these songs is incredible. The band itself plays pretty standard death metal, with tinges of crust and thrash. It’s been a long time since I heard so many melodic 1980s speed metal guitar solos on one album, but I like them quite a bit. Thankfully, there isn’t a single boring, wussed-out song on the album. Each and every song attacks with fury and fervor, making repeated listens essential.
I actually like this album much more than anything I’ve ever heard from Arch Enemy; I have always found those guys a bit too postured for my taste. But this, ladies and gentlemen, is far from postured. It’s dirty, bloody and violent metal, just the way that people with taste like it. I highly recommend Armageddon Mon Amour!
