Start Something

This five-piece from Pontypridd, South Wales is indeed starting something with this, the follow-up to their debut thefakesoundofprogress. In launching a successful assault on the USA, the band is doing what fellow Brit luminaries such as Oasis and Robbie Williams have failed to achieve, but with an album as glorious as Start Something, it’s no mystery as to how they are doing it.

More commercial than its predecessor and with a production job by Eric Valentine that somehow makes the huge riffs on tracks like “Last Train Home” radio friendly, Lost Prophets are part Def Leppard, part Metallica and part Machine Head. It’s a tasty combination that hits you from the opening bars of “We Still Kill The Old Way” and barely lets up from there. “Burn Burn” is a superb slice of spiky, melodic metal. The title track is a blistering, pacy effort with some frantic riffing, while “Last Summer” is more restrained, with a Police-y riff and an Americanized sound that makes it hard to believe Lost Prophets are actually from the UK.

Perfectly timed, expertly pitched and undeniably likeable, Start Something is the record that will catapult Lost Prophets into the big time.
