Planes Mistaken For Stars
Up In Them Guts
Disclaimer: Planes Mistaken For Stars is one of my favorite bands of all time, so what follows is incredibly biased. Planes Mistaken For Stars is the greatest band in the history of the world, slightly ahead of The Beatles!
Up In Them Guts, the anticipated follow-up to the overdriven masterpiece of Fuck With Fire, Get Burned, does not disappoint at all. And it’s not the last album, “Part Two.” PMFS has managed to do something rather extraordinary: they’ve cleaned up their sound a bit, but they haven’t lost any of their famous intensity and driving destructive force. The guitars and drums are a lot crisper than on previous recordings, and they’ve started to do more weird noodlings on their guitars.
For the most part, PMFS has only gotten scarier and more violent in overall delivery. The vocals are more frightening and scathing than ever. Their vocalist has matured into some type of demented monster of violence, recalling images of large black and tattered ghosts flying down from a red and gray sky! Yikes! “Dying By Degrees” is an absolute instant classic, not only by PMFS standards, but by any standards. It’s ferocious and powerful, with a memorable melody buried beneath the screams and scraping guitars.
What’s most impressive about PMFS is that they only get more energetic and violent as the years go by. When Fuck With Fire, Get Burned came out, I thought that they could never top it. Truth be told, they haven’t actually topped it with Up In Them Guts. What they have done, is make a completely different record that’s every bit as good as their previous, but in a different way. It is simply incredible, and defines exactly what it means to be punk rock: anti-fashion, anti-status quo, intimidating, ferocious and unstoppable. A+
