For a band that has a theme song, these guys are all right. Although not anything like a country band, they come out early with a country parody, “Alcohol and Pot,” that is really about banging someone else’s wife, and LIKING it. More typical is the spacey yet clearly enunciated “These Are Interesting Times.” The lyrics are convoluted and carry some message that may reveal itself upon extended listening, and they are set against an equally interesting soundscape. All the classic 70’s instruments are lurking here: cheap synthesizers, phalanged guitars and the occasion a fuzz box/reverb sound. They sound like something I heard a long time ago, but can’t quite place now.
Arty? Not pretentiously so, but this is a thinking person’s band. When Kofron writes lyrics, they aren’t just “Ooh, Ooh, baby,” but a meditation on life or action or music in general. Not exactly danceable, it does sound good driving around town or on the player while getting ready for a night on the town. Occasionally a bit Zappa sounding, sometimes more like Crack The Sky, even a shadow of The Creeps influences this album, and all for the better. Can Poetic Justice get you off a parking ticket? Sure, why not? It’s as good a defense as I can think of.
