The Sound of the Crowd

Damn

Another one of the great musical theatre writers, Cy Coleman, is dead at 75. Coleman wrote the scores for shows including Little Me, Barnum, I Love My Wife, and Sweet Charity.

Some of these I know only a song or two from (“Real Live Girl” from Little Me, for instance, or the title song from I Love My Wife). Others, like Sweet Charity, I know almost backwards and forwards, along with about a million other theatre fans. And Barnum is one of my favorite musicals ever.

He also wrote pop standards outside the Broadway musical world including “Witchcraft” and “The Best Is Yet To Come” for Frank Sinatra. In fact, the latter title was the last song Sinatra ever performed publicly. How’d you like to have that on your headstone?
