Magdalene

Limekiln

Renee Heartfelt features members of hardcore stalwarts Give Up the Ghost, Count Me Out and Striking Distance. While Magdalene combines bits and pieces of each of these bands, this EP is more of an exploration through the sounds of “emo,” circa the early to mid 1990’s.

Anyone around and going to shows in the early 1990s might have had dreams about how cool it would be if Samiam and Jawbreaker came together to form one band. Well, Renee Heartfelt is that dream come true! Take Samiam’s vocals and Jawbreaker’s pre-_Dear You_ sound, and you’ve got the basic idea of what these guys sound like. The majority of the songs here follow the same blueprint: clamoring, midtempo guitars, drums that hit extremely hard and are high in the mix and a ringy, overdriven bass (think: Jawbreaker’s Bivouac).

Magdalene is simply an awesome disc; one of my favorites of 2004. It rocks out with the power and swagger of Jawbreaker, Seaweed and Samiam. Highly Recommended!
