Love Everybody

PUSA Music

Many of you out there will have no problem remembering who The Presidents of The United States of America are. For those of you can’t quite recall, they are the band who sold millions of records in the mid-1990s with hits like “Kitty,” “Peaches” and “Lump.” Their latest effort, Love Everybody, is the band’s first release in five years, and it finds them in “massive unit shifting” form.

Although I found PUSA to be quite annoying back in the ’90s, I’m putting aside my personal feelings for this review. This album finds the guys sounding incredibly energetic, frantic and really quite entertaining. The album’s title track sounds like a cross between their semi-hit “Mach 5” and “Lump.” It features that mid-tempo rock groove, but the guitar syncopation makes it kind of stomping and powerful. It sounds like it could be a major hit, but it is 2005, and I’m not sure how well this silly pop stuff will be received by the “kids” of today. “5,500 Miles” sounds like another song with Top 40 potential, for it glides upon a strange, almost country-esque guitar riff, with pulsating drums and mildly humorous lyrics. “Shortwave” is a catchy little song that sounds almost like the Beach Boys crossed with Weezer.

Love Everybody truly is a lot better than their self-titled album from 1996 that sold millions. The guys in the band weren’t young when they made that album, but they have matured considerably over the past eight years. Their music and lyrics are less quirky, their guitars grind harder and their famous knack for finding the ultimate in catchy hooks is still intact.
