- Suburban Guerrilla on Slicing Up the Media Pie:
“I’ve never felt apologetic or defensive about not having a degree, but it sure does seem to bother other people. How many times have I heard: “You don’t have a degree? But you’re so articulate and intelligent!”
To which I always reply, “Interesting assumption. Has it really been your experience that every college graduate you know is both articulate and intelligent?”
- Our man James tipped me off to this one:
Sigh. You know, as much as I miss California in general and the Bay Area in particular, and for all my democratic liberal progressive cred: This is really fucking stupid.
This is why people rightly snicker at Berkeley as the American symbol of what happens when good intentions (or “PC”) go too far. It’s like when that waitress refused to serve a male customer because he was reading a copy of Playboy. And yes, IIRC, he was just reading it, he wasn’t looking at the pictures or holding them up and making lewd comments.
Yes, Jefferson’s ownership of slaves is offensive to anyone of good mind and heart and should be taught alongside with all his good works. That is only sensible. But to assert that because of it those good works are null and void is moronic, as James says.
Further, to suggest that it’s possible to find anyone to name a school after who is not going to offend anybody is simplistic at best. Lastly, though it’s been years since I was in a California public school, I’m going to go out on a limb here and say I’ll bet they have bigger fish to fry than what name is on the front of the building.
- Last but not least, time for another fun trip down to The Boondocks. Poor Hootie…
