Regis Philbin

When You’re Smiling

Hollywood Records

You know this guy has a great TV voice and sparkling good looks that middle-aged women fall for, but I’ll bet you never thought of Regis Philbin as a Vegas entertainer. He does a fine job, and makes one of those discs that you can just let spin in the background for a low-keyed but classy soundtrack to your life. Musically, he takes no real risks, but draws on the standard repertoire of lounge singers everywhere – Cole Porter, Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra fill the disc. While this keeps him solidly on the performer side of the curve, he knows his strengths and makes solid selections. Another strong point for Regis is a competent set of producers and arrangers. Steve Tyrell and Bob Mann are both veterans of this style and great musicians and singers on their own. Yeah, the name on the record sleeve will make you grimace, but Regis Philbin is a mighty fine singer, and a solid addition to your lounge music make out list.
