What?! Me thinks I be hearing actual hard music coming from a Doghouse release! Someone get me a Q-Tip, quick! Yes, ladies and gentleman, Henry actually rocks, and it completely lacks any chance of getting a major label re-release!
You may be asking, “What gives? I thought Doghouse was all about moving units and breeding future millionaires.” While you would not be wrong in such an assumption, it is also true that the very aggressive and very “punk rock” These Enzymes just happens to include members of All American Rejects and Taking Back Sunday, so maybe Doghouse is doing these guys a favor by releasing this record. Regardless of the reason for its release on Doghouse, I love this record! It’s angular and hard hitting, similar to Circus Lupus, Coalesce and even Since By Man!
I’m not joking even a little bit. One listen to “Never Talk About Religion,” and you’ll be freaking out like I was. It’s a melodic, gothic-spazzcore track that pounds and beats with pure, unadulterated ferocity. The guitars and drums play in varying syncopation during the verses, while during the chorus they come together in old school, up-tempo hardcore fashion to blast a hole through your chest. Not to mention, the vocalist has a rather violent and scratchy growl/scream that gives this band instant credibility.
I know it won’t happen, but I’d really like to see the two guys from All American Rejects jump ship from their regular gig and fully devote themselves to this project. It’s one of the most striking EPs that I’ve heard in a long time. I can’t wait for the full length! Way to go, Doghouse!
