Cirque du Soleil Musique
Well, maybe you’ve seen Cirque du Soleil, or maybe not, but it’s an awe-inspiring experience. While you focus on the traditional clowns and amazing acrobats of this animal-free circus, backing the whole experience is a complex, throbbing soundtrack. Not exactly new age, and not exactly atonal, Cirque’s music clearly defines the stage and action contained therein, but rarely calls attention to itself. It contains strong melodic and rhythmic structures, but not in a classic “Take it to the bridge” verse and chorus sense. Rather, it’s an ambient sound, modulated to complement the action on stage.
Listening to show music with no visual cues is sometimes awkward, but the music branch of Cirque turned over their various soundtracks to a few well-grounded DJs. The remixes transform the sound from ambient to environmental, making it stand alone. The result is calming without being monotonous, interesting without being over-powering and moody without being cranky. Cirque isn’t a group that really focuses on “hits,” but seeks to create a complete artistic experience. You can get the show music easily enough, but this a much better diversion.
