Truth to Power

What we’re up against

Whenever I read the strongly worded, MUST ACT NOW, urgent pleas for readers of websites and blogs to DEMAND that the Bush circus maximus “do the right thing” on issue X, I have to laugh.

We can’t demand our government do anything. Bush and his cabinet are completely beyond the control of even Congress- and Congress ain’t exactly on our side either. Bush and his minions have been told by the Supreme Court to allow detainees lawyers, and yet they continue to drag their feet. This entire Rove episode? Does anyone seriously think that Bush will fire him, as he swore to do to anyone caught leaking national security information? Ha.

In case you’re not convinced of what we’re up against, read this:

You discuss the military’s Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape program, known by its acronym, sere. What is sere, and how is it related to the treatment of prisoners at Guantanamo?

Before 9/11, many of these behavioral scientists were affiliated with sere schools, where they used their knowledge to train U.S. soldiers how to resist coercive interrogations. But since 9/11, several sources told me, these same behavioral scientists began to “reverse engineer” the process. Instead of teaching resistance, they used their skills to help overcome resistance in U.S.-held detainees.</i>

These people aren’t to messed with, and they are seemingly not accountable to anyone. Hang on. It’s gonna be a bumpy ride.
