The Odds of Winning
Since the release of The Churchills’ superb sophomore album, Big Ideas (2002), lead singer/songwriter Ron Haney and bassist Bart Schoudel have spent most of their time developing a highly successful production company. Now finally they have stopped making great records for other indie bands long enough to make a new one of their own, and The Odds of Winning was entirely worth the wait.
Combining the vibe and ethos of bands like Jellyfish and Cheap Trick, The Churchills’ employ crunching riffs, retro flourishes and incredible melodies. Killer songs like “Not So Goodbye,” “Sometimes Your Best Isn’t Good Enough” and the outstanding “They’re Never Gonna Find Me” make The Odds Of Winning easily one of the essential indie releases of 2005.
A different incarnation of the band almost hit the big time with their debut major label release, You Are Here, and the band’s T-shirts were given ample airtime on Meadow Soprano’s chest. Now, with the release of The Odds of Winning and licensing deals with shows like ER, Summerland and Scrubs in place to feature their music, The Churchills look like they really do have the odds in their favor.
