Decade Schmecade
Still lost in the stream
by Thomas Schulte
I have been doing broadcasting of all sorts for about 15 years now: AM, FM, College radio, Internet radio, and even pirate radio. However, starting about three months ago I decided to largely quit doing music journalism and focus on broadcasting as my foremost expression as a music enthusiast. From all my various broadcasts, I have culled the Top 19 albums by spins played on my shows so far in 2005. Here they are with my comments:

Comments, in a loose and free form manner, much like my format.
I remember back over fifteen years ago when Karen Neal (Inside Out/Thrall/Queen Bee) gave me a cassette of SUN CITY GIRLS. It was so confused and bizarre I did not know whether it was a taping error or not. However, I was fascinated by the audio collage and loved it. I never asked here if it was a mistake, or not. Now I am a fan of all of Alan Bishop’s projects … ASYLUM STREET SPANKERS blew me away when I saw one of their first shows at a SXSW showcase at The Continental in Austin back in something like ‘94. I used to use the title track of MY FAVORITE RECORD as a theme song to a vinyl showcase … I had all kinds of trouble arranging a interview with Colin of GBH and while I was trying to work it out, I played a lot of GBH. Like I needed an excuse. You can access this interview and many others at my interview archive portal … BESSIE SMITH was an originator and her body of work is one I respect and enjoy … U. UTAH PHILLIPS is a fascinating storyteller first brought to my attention through the efforts of Ani DiFranco … BASIL RATHBONE, noted British actor, shows up here because during like eight weeks of airing Edgar Alan Poe material I played much recited by Rathbone … QUEEN ended up topping the British charts this year with more Top 40 longevity than even The Beatles. I paid a lot of tribute to that great band this year … BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS really worked hard in their day. These great archive recording keep coming out, often through the Rounder family of labels, but this excellent box set is on Hip-O … JOHNNY MADDOX is one of the best interview guests I have ever had. I have talked to the ragtime piano great twice now … KRIS HOLLIS KEY is a behind the scenes man that stepped forward with a great alt-Americana album … The mystery and magic of MASTER MUSICIANS OF BUKKAKE took me in. Does anyone know what the story is behind this project?…After being a fan of his books, the NICK TOSCHES spoken word performance was a revelation … Of course I was saddened by the demise of RICHARD PRYOR and spun almost all my Laff Records titles from the comic great … The soundtrack work of WENDY CARLOS is nonpareil and Carlos was an electronic innovator … Balkan-tinged experimental indie rock from CHARMING HOSTESS is something everyone should experience … The boundless tales of H.P. LOVECRAFT definitely had a home at Outsight Radio Hours this year…AUM Fidelity’s reissue of SHRIMP BOAT early recordings was another revelation this year … THE DIALS is one of this infectious indie pop bands I could just hear all day … Let us never forget out first loves, bands like THE FLESH EATERS …
