Tres Chicas
Bloom, Red & the Ordinary Girl
Yep Roc
Think back to a time when country music was ruled by the likes of Barbra Mandrell, Crystal Gayle and Loretta Lynn; back before country was just a twangy version of pop music. That is the era that Tres Chicas bring back with their second release, Bloom, Red & the Ordinary Girl. Ex-Whiskeytown member Caitlin Cary, Ex-Hazeldine singer Tonya Lamm and current Glory Fountain member Lynn Blakey debuted their traditional country sound as a side project back in 2004 with Sweetwater. Since then, they have made Tres Chicas their main project, and it shows.
“Drop Me Down” opens the album with instant harmony, as it recalls “Ain’t Nobody Cryin’ But the Baby,” most recently used in the movie O’ Brother Where Art Thou? Separately, these three ladies have carried themselves to moderate success. Together, they can very easily take the world by storm. While most country artists are trying to add more glitz and glam to make themselves look as un-country as possible, Tres Chicas strip all of that away and let the harmonies and lyrics take over. Such as these lines from “Red”: “Red is the blood of the heart you have broken/And green as you well know is ending/You have gone off to another one who you think suits you better/I don’t wish you well/And I’ll see you in hell/And I’m sitting here burning your letters.” (To the man who inspired this song: I hope you’re happy.)
Bloom, Red & the Ordinary Girl is an album that not only brings country back to its roots, but it showcases three incredibly talented ladies whose sum is greater than their parts. The beauty and majesty of this record is the reason music was created. I look forward to much more from these three fine ladies.
