New Jersey native Nadine Zahr has an astonishing voice that belies her 25 years and gives real depth and power to her debut album, Underneath The Everyday. Zahr’s angst-ridden, cathartic songs show real promise, and showcase a voice that was honed singing in musical theater before relocating to LA. Since that move, she has toured nationally and released a critically-acclaimed EP.
Underneath The Everyday kicks off with the emotive strains of “Where I Never Was,” before “Beautiful Soldier” slides into a more upbeat vibe, with Zahr’s voice drawing comparisons to Ani DiFranco and even Janis Joplin. The jaunty acoustic-driven pop of “The Day” is the album’s standout, but more introspective tunes such as “Sunset” and “A Little Better” make it a close call. “Horses and Fish,” which was recorded in one take, gives a glimpse of Zahr’s qualities in a live setting.
Underneath The Everyday is an accomplished debut, and it’s clear Zahr is an artist of immense promise.
