Gold Medal

Atlantic Records

Gold Medal is the sophomore major label effort from Bay Area all-girl rockers The Donnas, but although there’s plenty of bombast and sassy energy from the quartet, the album doesn’t earn the billing its title suggests. Looking like rejects from a Charlie’s Angels audition, The Donnas’ love of hard rock and ’70s power pop is immediately apparent on the blistering “Fall Behind Me” and “I Don’t Want To Know (If You Don’t Want Me),” but the bubblegum nature of their Joan Jett-influenced music ensures the album quickly becomes derivative, despite Butch Walker’s polished production.

The title track provides a folksy deviation from dull, trademark rockers like “Don’t Break Me Down,” but it’s not enough to prevent Gold Medal only deserving a bronze at best.
