A Perfect Circle

A heavy metal version of John Lennon’s “Imagine” is something the great man would probably never have envisaged, but that’s just one of a number of diverse cover versions on Perfect Circle’s third full-length release. Just as bizarre is the dark and brooding interpretation of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and a take on the Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe classic “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding.” Full marks to the band for attempting such ambitious covers, but the experiment isn’t a success. I suspect fans of the band prefer them on more original material, such as “Passive,” rather than trying to understand the reasoning behind reworking material such as Joni Mitchell’s “Fiddle and the Drum.”
