At The Point

High Wire

Known more for his raucous acoustic sets than for his numerous studio releases, Matt Nathanson’s At The Point finds the affable singer-songwriter in his element in a live setting.

The attraction of Nathanson’s live shows is not just a catalogue of great material, but also a self-depreciating stage presence that at times borders on stand-up. Recorded during three shows at The Point in June 2005, the 17-strong tracklist covers — as Nathanson puts it in his intro — “decades of hits,” including “Curve of The Earth”, “Bent” and “Suspended” from his criminally ignored major label release Beneath These Fireworks. Older material, like “Church Clothes” and “Lost Myself In Search of You,” is represented as well as, as is also the ubiquitous cover of Dire Straits’ “Romeo and Juliet.” But the legendary interludes Nathanson’s fans have come to love are thankfully not edited out, although some fans may have liked to hear more music at their expense.

Short of buying a ticket, At The Point is the closest representation available of the Matt Nathanson gig experience, and judging by the enthusiastic response of the sold-out crowd to every word and every bar, it’s certainly something to savour.
