Transcontinental is an album of hugely enjoyable country rock that recalls influences such as Counting Crows, Little Texas and a hint of John Cougar Mellencamp. Brothers Trevor and Cameron Lynch grew up in Kansas and now live at opposite ends of the USA holding down high-powered day jobs as an entertainment executive and attorney respectively, but music is something they share an obvious passion and talent for.
The involvement of producer and co-writer Cary Pierce undoubtedly lends an air of class and professionalism to proceedings, but with or without Pierce, it’s clear American Royal has a knack for writing catchy-as-hell songs such as opener “Angelina”, the infectious “Right Girl, Wrong Time” and the superb “Be Her Man”. Heartfelt ballad “All of Me” apart, Transcontinental is refreshingly uptempo and upbeat throughout, and none more so than the top-down, summery vibe of the acoustic-based “Good Life”.
If country radio stations get hold of any of the 10 tracks on Transcontinental, the Lynch brothers could be forced into a hasty career change.
