RockPaperScissors

Big Helium

Diversity, innovation and a whole lot of experimentation are what you’ll find on composer Michael Brook’s highly anticipated third solo record, RockPaperScissors.

The celebrated musician and producer – who has worked with the likes of Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, Youssou N’Dour, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Bryan Ferry, and The Pogues – has admitted this album is more mainstream than his previous works, but it’s still a mood record, full of delicate textures with a complex sonic landscape.

His time as an engineer at Daniel Lanois’ studio has clearly influenced his work, as demonstrated on “Darker Room,” which also showcases Brook’s acclaimed guitar playing and a fascinating stream-of-consciousness narrative. Elsewhere, the trip-hop of “Doges” is a real standout, the epic “Pasadena Pt 2” enchants with its dreamy orchestration and the title track hits a melodic high point, with its repeated chorus.

It’s not an easy listen by any stretch, but the hidden depths of RockPaperScissors make for an ultimately rewarding experience.
