Apollo Up
Chariots of Fire
Theory 8
With influences stretching back over three decades, Apollo Up is an unpredictable, entirely unique band and Chariots of Fire is a chaotic, raw, yet eminently listenable collection of no-nonsense alternative rock.
The explosive “Walk The Plank” somehow melds the pop tones of Elvis Costello with a post-punk spirit that lives on throughout the album’s 36 exhilarating minutes, and “Invisible Syllable” continues in a similar vein while displaying an obvious affection for The Jam. Elsewhere “Cut Up” makes inventive use of horns, and the pounding rhythms of “Custom Critical” hints that an Apollo Up live show must be an experience to savor.
At times, Chariots of Fire feels like improvised mayhem, but there’s a charm and creative edge to the majority of the tracks that mark Apollo Up out from the crowd.
