As Tall As Lions

Triple Crown

If The Mars Volta weren’t so otherworldly, or if Coldplay had some balls – the result would be As Tall As Lions. The NY based Ambient/Indie extravaganza rubs shoulders with greatness (comparisons to Radiohead never hurt), yet idle in the teenage pool of Progressive/Emo tours sharing bills with Coheed & Cambria, Nightmare of You, and The Receiving End of Sirens. I listen to the band’s second release and I don’t hear emo drone, I hear the soaring experimentations of British Indie Rock as filtered through the dreams of young American boys from Long Island.

The piano ballad “Love, Love, Love (Love, Love)” is a gorgeous, heart on the sleeve expression of romance that is wonderfully naked in its emotion. While “Be Here Now” – a song about paranoia, insomnia, loneliness and all things teen angst – channels a touch of Sting. “I’m Kicking Myself” has a quiet acoustic sound and soft voice that reminds me of Zeppelin’s softer side (“That’s The Way”).

As Tall As Lions now stand on the edge of the great precipice – tread water in trend, or excel into the great unknown where some bands triumph but others fall to their deaths.
