Your Kind Words

Ananova Recording Company

Your Kind Words is a collection of interesting country-rock tunes that makes for a promising debut from this South Boston-based singer-songwriter.

“Green River Killer,” which chronicles a real-life Seattle serial killer, is the most arresting song, with its spoken word verses, guitar picking and Johnny Cash overtones, but more straight-ahead tunes like “Never Happen Again” demonstrate Schroder’s ear for a commercial melody. “Hillbilly Makeover” and “(Sorry I’m Not) The Home Depot Type” perhaps stray too far into humorous territory, and sit uneasily next to darker material such as “Father Jones,” which examines sex scandals surrounding the Catholic Church.

However, Rich Schroder is undeniably a talented lyricist and if he focuses his writing into an album that flows a little better next time around, he could realize the promise he displays on Your Kind Words.
