While The City Sleeps
One Little Indian
Melancholic Icelandic singer-songwriter Kalli’s solo debut While The City Sleeps is in the same vein as albums by other solo artists such as Teitur and Matthew Ryan.
His songs are built around ethereal imagery, atmospheric instrumentation and slow-burning melodies, as demonstrated by the lines of the epic “Fear” and haunting opener “Raindrops.”
The downbeat “River of Darkness” is as disillusioned as anything Radiohead or Jeff Buckley have recorded and even the delicate acoustics of “Sunny Day” manage to sound like they refers to winter rather than summer.
That said, there’s a beauty to material such as the brilliant “Morning Rain” that convinces you to persevere listening, and the reward is an album as deep and complex as it is dark and moody.
