M’Fer, I want more O’Reilly
For six years, the rational and intelligent among us have had to endure a near endless barrage of hate speech, propaganda and outright lying from our media. 15 minutes subjected to a cable news program or AM talk radio staggers the mind with the complete Alice in Wonderland spectacle of it all. Things that any normal person knows to be untrue are routinely accepted as fact (All Muslims want to kill us), heroes are scorned repeatedly (Max Cleland, Cindy Sheehan) while swaggering chickenhawks (Bush, Cheney, et al) question the patriotism and sacrifice of those who actually served. It is a loathsome, disgusting spectacle, one that cheapens our public discourse, dumbs down an already ignorant citizenry, and allows our country to commit the most horrendous violations of human rights without restraint.
That our country is a kind, benevolent ruler of the planet has always- since we snatched Hawaii away from the natives- been a farce. We rape, we plunder, we ruin countries militarily, economically and socially. But at least until the last six years, we largely made the trains run on time. Not anymore. Katrina. Minnesota bridges. Sub prime loans. It’s all falling apart. It’s falling apart not because the system doesn’t work- it will, after a fashion, if left alone, work. It’s failing because the people who control the system don’t believe in the system.
You cannot dodge the draft and then 30 years later send people to war.
You cannot legislate public schools and then send your children to private institutions.
You cannot make millions from the energy business and then state we must end our dependence on oil.
Anyone pausing a moment to think about any of the above quickly agrees. Its just common sense. But in the last six years, we haven’t been allowed that moment. No time for reflection, contemplation, study. Not when we have the braying of 24 hour news piped into all public places- bars, airports, waiting rooms, all filled with nonstop clatter of lies. Warmongering, big government propaganda spewed at us constantly, to the point that it becomes a wall of noise. Dissension is marginalized, penalized, silenced, instead of discussed. Histrionic as it sounds, our nation cannot long survive on a currency of lies. Not when the lies don’t work.
How does this relate to Bill O’Reilly you might ask?
O’Reilly, along with Hannity, Limbaugh, and the mentally deranged Michael Savage are the leading Leni Riefenstahls of our era. Their incessant lying and demagoguery, combined with the nonstop cheer leading for the death of any person or idea different than themselves, should not be tolerated in a sane society. But since the only thing worse than these people is censorship, the government has no dog in this fight.
But we do. Six years of being subjected to this cruel, treasonous form of whorespeak have left most of us fatigued. Letters to the editor, complaints to advertisers, blog posts, none has any real effect. If only one of these jackasses would say something so utterly stupid, so incredibly backward that even the man in the street stops and goes “Lord, what a fool”.
Thank you, Bill O’Reilly.
Bill O’Reilly reported that he “couldn’t get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia’s restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it’s run by blacks, primarily black patronship.” O’Reilly added: “There wasn’t one person in Sylvia’s who was screaming, ‘M-Fer, I want more iced tea.’ “
Again, thank you Bill O’Reilly. By touching that third rail of American discourse-race- you’ve given the rest of us the rope we need to hang you. And make no mistake, you need to be hung. You and your ilk- with your pom poms of death, suckling up to the big boys, pumping the nonstop river of disinformation that blinds our nation from the actual landscape of the world- your time must end if we’re to advance as a nation, or survive as a world. By endlessly distracting the people from the actual issues we face, by condemning the victims and kissing the killers, you lessen our country. You are a shame, a disgrace, an embarrassment. If you live out the rest of your days fighting the meme of “Bill O’Reilly-Racist” while you hope to get hired doing the weather at 3 AM in Toledo, good riddance. Is it fair? Probably not.
And somehow, that makes it all the more sweet. You built the scaffold, you knotted the noose.
Motherfucker, I want less Bill O’Reilly.
