The Donnas

Bitchin’

Purple Feather

I was never a fan of The Donnas, but the mere sight of their latest (and seventh full-length release, if ya can believe it!) album Bitchin’ yanked the child of the ’80s right out of me and I just had to give it a listen.

Released on the band’s own label, Purple Feather Records, the ladies seem to be reinventing themselves as a bad-ass rock band. In the grand tradition of The Runaways, these Los Angeles rockers are reminding the world that the girls can not only rock as hard as the guys, but they look way better in the tight pants and tiny shirts.

Everything about this album screams glam rock; from the album cover (a nice ass in leather pants), to the hair metal font for the band name, to the ’80s pastel colors and shapes that adorn the image on the disc. Like Motley Crue, The Donnas are bringing the music back to basics: loud, fun, sexy. It’s about singing along, not intellectualizing.

Admittedly, a lot of the riffs on here are ripped off (“Don’t Wait Up For Me” is straight up Joan Jett’s version of “Do You Wanna Touch Me (Oh Yeah)?”, and “What Do I Have To Do?” starts off almost identically to The White Stripes’ “Blue Orchid”), but as introduction to The Donnas this album could not be smoother. The riffs may be familiar, but that only reels me in deeper.

For a band that started their career as a bit of a novelty (they were a mere 13 years old when making their first album!), it’s pretty damn impressive that they’re still around 14 years later, let alone putting out a record as irresistible as this one.

I’m completely hooked! “Don’t Wait For Me,” “Smoke It Out,” “Wasted” – this album is bitchin’!
