Kate Voegele
Don’t Look Away
MySpace Records
You can see the rationale behind the decision of the executives of MySpace’s new record label division to sign female singer-songwriter Kate Voegele: her clean-cut image and radio-friendly music should appeal to a significant portion of their target demographic.
Granted, Voegele isn’t covering ground the likes of Avril Lavigne and Michelle Branch haven’t already visited, but she makes a credible attempt to repeat a successful formula, roping in producer Marhsall Altman to give the songs a suitably polished sheen was also a wise move.
Typical teen themes of unrequited love and rebelliousness are the limit of the lyrical ambition and songs such as the spiky “I Get It,” the sweet “Wish You Were” and the anthemic “Chicago” are undeniably melodic.
There’s a blatant commercial, calculated feel to Don’t Look Away, but there’s no doubting the quality of the pop/rock evident throughout.
