Satanique Samba Trio

I’m not sure the world is ready for this group, and I doubt it will be anytime soon. Satanique Samba Trio sent us this disc from way down in Brazil, and it’s not like any samba you’ve ever heard. Rather, it’s an undanceable agglomeration of noises and notes, all ripped apart from the basic rhythm of the samba. I’d almost say it’s a cubist approach to the sound, as if you heard the notes, but not in the sequence usually associated with Latin music. The closest I can come to describing it might be “Spike Jones without the funny lyrics.” Extended listening is a chore, akin to digging through the sort of ultra hip jazz favored by the pretentious in the early days of Hi-Fi. This album isn’t for dancing, it’s for thinking. I think I’ll put something else on next.
