Scientology goes after Wikileaks

Scientology threatens Wikileaks with injunction

The Church of Scientology has acknowledged that Wikileaks is offering the world quick and easy access to the church’s top-secret “bibles”.

Or should that be formerly top-secret?

On March 24, the swashbuckling truth-seekers at Wikileaks.org published what they referred to as “the collected secret ‘bibles’ of Scientology,” and three days later, church-friendly lawyers threatened the site with legal action if the documents weren’t taken down. Calling them “Advanced Technology of the Scientology religion,” the lawyers pointed out that the documents are copyrighted works registered to the Religious Technology Center (RIC), a church-related holding company.

Wikileaks did not remove the documents. But it did tell the world their veracity has been verified.</em>

Good for Wikileaks. Most don’t have the guts to take these freaks on.

Unless, of course, you’re the creators of South Park:

(South Park creator Trey) Parker stated that Isaac Hayes’ membership had previously kept the show’s creators from writing a full-episode which parodies Scientology. However, the decision to ultimately produce a South Park episode satirizing Scientology was partially inspired by the friendship the show’s creators have with Penn Jillette. Jillette was originally planning to do an episode of Bullshit! based on Scientology, but Showtime prohibited him from doing so to avoid the possibility of legal action from the Church of Scientology. Parker commented, “We’re going, That’s fucked up. And hearing other people say, ‘You can’t do that,’ – you can only say ‘You can’t do that’ so many times to Matt and me before we’re gonna do it. Finally, we just had to tell Isaac, ‘Dude, we totally love working with you, and this is nothing personal, it’s just we’re South Park, and if we don’t do this, we’re belittling everything else we’ve ripped on.”

Seek out “Trapped in the Closet”. Classic stuff.
