Truth to Power

Hey CBS, we already had a complete idiot for president, don’t ne

It’s beyond clear that John McCain is just not up to the rigors of being a candidate for President, much less the actual job. He is a compulsive liar, a man who will spew anything he thinks the person in front of him wants to hear. His answers range from nonsensical to distasteful, and yet, nobody really seems to call him on it. As bad as that is, as stupid as he often appears, at least its somewhat legitimate; if a man wants to talk his way out of a job, let him.

So why didn’t CBS?

McCain Gets History Of The Surge Wrong, CBS Doesn’t Air Footage

During a CBS interview on Tuesday, John McCain made a stone cold error on a subject about which he claims expert knowledge: the “surge” strategy in Iraq. In an interview with anchor Katie Couric, the Arizona Republican said, inaccurately, that the surge strategy was responsible for the much-touted “Anbar Awakening,” in which Sunni sheiks turned against Al Qaeda, helping in turn to reduce violence in the country.

In fact, as Spencer Ackerman and Ilan Goldenberg have reported, the record firmly establishes the opposite: instead of being caused by the surge, the key signs of the Anbar Awakening occurred not only before that strategy was implemented, but before it was ever conceived.

Yet McCain’s error was not seen by any CBS Evening News viewers. As MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann noted (video below), “CBS curiously, to say the least, left it on the edit room floor. It aired Katie Couric’s question, but in response, it aired part of McCain’s answer to the other question instead.” (Ironically, this edit came on the same day that McCain’s campaign released a video mocking the media’s “love affair” with Obama.)</em>

When Bush ran for President, it was easy to dismiss what he said as transparent lies- he called himself a “compassionate conservative” yet as governor he executed more death row inmates than most other states combined. You could do this on anything that came out of his mouth, and really, he was speaking to people who expected him to lie.

But McCain? Remember a year ago or so, when his campaign was teetering above the abyss, he was pawning his bus on ebay, whatever? He’d appear on the Daily Show and was somewhat amusing bantering with Jon Stewart, self deprecating and “folksy”. Well, those days are long gone. McCain is clearly not up to constant demands of the press attention he is subject to as a candidate (none of his callous advisor’s are either, apparently), yet everyday he’s out there, scrambling geography, reinventing history and blathering his “values” (which, from the moment he affixed his lips to Hagee’s tailpipe, are laughable), but for CBS to attempt to whitewash reality and not allow McCain to appear as the utter warmongering fool that he is, they are no better than Fox…or Pravda.

Now, Obama may well turn out to be just another big tax Dem- but at least he’s not an utter fool. We just lived- most of us, anyway– through eight years of a moron in chief. We literally can’t afford to do it again. Unless we or Israel invade Iran, McCain is going to beaten like a gong in November, an outcome the GOP surely knew was inevitable, hence allowing him to run in the first place. But watching him along the way, pandering, lying and snarling? It’s all too much. Can we just go ahead and save us all the hideous nonsense we’ll be subject to, and just hold the election tomorrow?

Please?

No? Ok. Then at the least, CBS? Do your fucking job- report the news.
