Songs from the Middle of the World: Solo/Acoustic Rarities Vol.1

It was only a matter of time before such a prolific songwriter as Chris Trapper released a collection of rarities, and Songs from the Middle of the World: Solo/Acoustic Rarities Vol.1 is certainly worth the wait.

But it’s quality as well as volume which characterizes the former Push Stars frontman and erstwhile solo artist’s songwriting. The majority of the 17 tracks showcased here could have easily have made the cut on an earlier album, in either acoustic or a more fleshed-out form.

Take melancholy opener “Faded and Jaded” as an example: it’s a raw acoustic demo, but the simple melody at the heart of the song is nothing less than captivating. The sweet “A Day Without You” is also of a similar high standard, with a delicate hook and beautifully observed poignant lyrics.

“Living Downtown” is another trademark Trapper composition, with his simple guitar line and unique voice bursting with resonance, while the breathless “Wrong Side of Town” moves along at a hundred miles an hour, yet still has a relaxed and chilled-out vibe. The mesmerizing “Avalanche” and “Hard Times” further impress, while “Anywhere You Are” sounds like a leftover from Trapper’s superb Hey You 2007 solo album and closes the album in fine style.

Songs from the Middle of the World: Solo/Acoustic Rarities Vol.1 serves not only as a bridge between Trapper’s ‘proper’ studio albums, but also as a marker of the sheer songwriting talent he undoubtedly possesses.
