Sarah Borges takes the Broken Singles to the rock side of her country-rock palette while still holding on to the strong hooks that she is so good at dishing on her latest, The Stars Are Out.
The mix of five originals and five covers offers variety and allows Borges to explore her musical range, especially on the cover of The Lemonheads’ “Ride With Me” and the killer rockabilly “I’ll Show You How.” But she sounds like she’s being constrained on the cover of Smokey Robinson’s “Being With You.”
“Symphony” closes the album with a distinct indie feel that sounds like it was stripped right off of a Neko Case album. Borges also solidifies her new-found indie cred with a cover of “Yesterday’s Love” from new wavers Any Trouble.
Sarah Borges and the Broken Singles broke onto the scene as an Americana act with their debut Silver City and then dabbled in rock on their Sugar Hill debut Diamonds in the Dark. The Stars Are Out has them leaning heavily on their new-found rock sound, but staying grounded in alt-country, all while creating a sound that gets better with every listen.
