Eddy Current Suppression Ring

Goner Records

Originally released in 2006, this debut by Australia’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring gets its U.S. release courtesy of Goner Records — a label I now feel inclined to say thank you to after hearing this unassuming burst of garage punk goodness.

The band formed at a job-related Christmas party when a whole lot of booze, some unattended instruments, a pink stereo, and a blank tape all came together in a haphazard, yet beautiful way. In the sobering light of the day after, the resultant tunes still sounded quality enough to provoke an impromptu recording session. Thanks to the beer-swilling, music-loving gods that they did, because this full-length album is a must, must, MUST for anyone who has ever spent time sweating themselves silly in smoky garages, or warehouses, listening to some unknown/unsigned band in the hopes of stumbling upon unsung brilliance.

Cross mutate Black Flag and Circle Jerks with Sonic Youth and Oblivians and then ship it all down under, and you’ve got a superficial hint at the Eddy Current Suppression Ring sound.

Songs to smash your head to: “Insufficient Funds,” “Pitch a Tent,” “Get Up Morning”
