As much as some of Fischerspooner’s die-hard fans may want to hear variations on the group’s eight-year-old smash debut #1, evolution is essential in the pop-electronica world. The duo has long since left behind electro-clash in favor of a softer, more well-rounded approach to their music. It’s what comes through on their third release Entertainment that proves that the change may be the best decision they’ve made.

When a band excels as thoroughly at crafting and executing a vision as Casey Spooner and Warren Fischer did with their 2001 first release, it’s hard not to feel pressured to keep raising the bar. But Fischerspooner is not a victim of the sophomore slump. They went in a decidedly different direction on 2005’s Odyssey, a pulsating, intelligent, and more mature sounding effort.

They were smart to employ what worked so well on their second album to make Entertainment as solid as it is. That’s not to say it’s just more of the same. As good as Odyssey was at helping Fischerspooner transition away from their first incarnation, Entertainment makes a statement of confidence in where they are now. Fischer’s detailed, multi-layered production provides a solid foundation for Spooner’s lyrics and vocals on standouts like “We Are Electric” and “Door Train Home.”

Those who were hoping to reminisce might feel shortchanged, but should definitely give Entertainment a listen. Although the energy has changed, there are still hints of the spark that put Fischerspooner on the map. It’s how they’ve transformed that spark that will keep them there.
