Gilbert Arenas should be banned for life from the NBA

Wednesday (1-27-10), Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittendon of the NBA’s Washington Wizards were both suspended for the remainder of the season for bringing guns into their locker room and displaying them after a game. Apparently, they were continuing an argument from the team flight back home and then next game, they decided to settle it…for good.

Now no shots were fired and neither pointed the guns at anybody, but this is an instantly terminable offense in almost all workplaces. Outside my workplace it says “Weapons of any kind are STRICTLY PROHIBITED.” Arenas has already pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge and Crittendon to a misdemeanor, but banning them for the season is not enough. If this had happened anywhere else, they would have been fired on the spot. Why not make examples of their stupidity? Banning them for life would not only cost them their careers in the NBA and a whole lot of money (In Arenas’s case over $80 million dollars!) but it would send a message to the rest of the league that such blatent stupidity will cost you your job. I know it would cost me mine, but there is also no way I’m bringing a gun to work…ever.
