America spends its money on wars and disaster recovery and leaves the Arts to fend for themselves, but the Canadian Government actually gives money to up and coming rock bands. Whether that’s right or wrong, it shows a difference of priorities on each side of the 49th parallel. Yukon Blonde makes a pleasant, hook-filled power-pop that combines Canadian self-effacement with a playful glimmer in their eyes. These are the nice guys in the bar that get to go home with that really attractive woman in the tight dress and her posse of friends.

This collection of air-play-friendly love songs features clear and homey vocals over simple drums and an innocent guitar line. “Wind Blows” might have come out of the second British invasion, “Rather Be With You” could have come out the ’70s pop scene that gave us The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac, and “Brides Song” should highlight the traditional dance between Daddy and his no-longer-virginal daughter. Yukon Blonde is just distinctive enough to let you know it’s really them and not some cheap imitator from Seattle, but stays firmly in the bounds set by modern musical tastes. These guys are touring this spring and might need to sleep on your couch until the big hit arrives. Be nice to them, and they’ll bring beer.
