Hexes and Ohs
Canada’s Hexes and Ohs are Edmund Lam (on vocals, drums, etc.) and Heidi Donnelly (on keyboards, vocals, and whatever else is on hand). They’ve been together since high school, but whereas most couples who’ve been together that long have either retreated into sullen TV-watching or are absorbed with the business of day-to-day nuclear family livin’, Hexes and Ohs spend their days and nights crafting winsome, gleaming, Rube Goldberg-esque new wave. Bedroom Madness (funny title) is redolent of New Order and the Rentals (remember them?) and Human League. Their music is propulsive and cutesy and all toe-tappy, sometimes a little too straightforward and poppy for my tastes, but I’m a cranky fuck who doesn’t like Lady Gaga, so whatever. And while I’m at it, I should mention that Byron Wong’s production is too clean and too pristine, where the songs would have benefitted from some Joe Meek-style bedroom madness.
