The Man That Time Forgot

Big Legal Mess/Fat Possum Records

Didn’t think folks made music like this anymore, and for the most part, they don’t. John Paul Keith and his band, the One Four Fives, craft pop music with a gritty edge, straight up and raw, a refreshing change to the over-produced, bland crap we call “pop” now. Nope, this is Squeeze mixed with Doug Sahm, Marshall Crenshaw singing garage rock, all in a confident, energetic mix that refuses to be pinned down stylistically. Keith is a great guitarist and vocalist, but the record’s secret weapon is organist Al Gamble. You’d swear he’s Augie Meyers (legendary Sir Douglas Quintet member) on the opening “Never Could Say No,” and it’s his touch on the ivories that rounds out the record’s sound. A former member of the Viceroys, Keith seems proud to create music “that time forgot” – and when it’s done this well, it won’t stay forgotten long. Good stuff!
