There are some things that are just meant to go together. Like a lock and a key or honey and a bee, Purity Ring has stumbled upon a new magnificent combination. With the release of their debut album Shrines, this Edmonton-based experimental duo has shown the world that hip-hop beats and dream pop vocals can work together splendidly. Though we may not see Megan James and Corin Roddick become the next Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, they have developed a new style of music that will tug at the heartstrings of hipsters everywhere.
Corin, previously a drummer, started experimenting with electronic drumming and techno music and found that James’s vocals turned them into something unexpected. His hip-hop beats and indie techno riffs create the perfect stage for her dainty vocals to dance right into your heart. Their album, though focused on a very particular sound, does not lack diversity. “Fireshrine,” one of their more popular tracks, is full of lovely little vocal runs and catchy riffs, while others, such as “Cartographist,” have a more haunting tone, showing true skill and creativity. You’ll find after just one listen that Purity Ring is no one-trick pony.
From the custom-made outfits by James herself, to their teal vinyl album, their music is not the only unique aspect of the pair. During live shows, Roddick uses a self-made instrument that controls his beats and the lights at the same time, creating an immersive experience. These quirks are what make them wonderful, and I highly recommend you check them out.
Go ahead, let the bass wrap you up in a cocoon and have James’s vocals carry you off to someplace wonderful.
