Leonard, the Lonely Astronaut

101 Distribution

High concept music, high production value cover art, 2001: A Space Odyssey references – all an excellent basis for this rocking collection. The cover has Mr. Osenga on a white space ship bridge complete with what might be a PDP-8 sticking out of the wall. I think there’s a movie associated with this project, the set is of that high quality.

Conceptually, Leonard has had some relationship problems, and he takes a crappy gig swabbing space toilets to think things through away from the hustle and bustle of Earth. Those thoughts are these songs, and these songs are realized through some excellent and exciting guitar works. “Time” is all about being out of time, “Ever and Always” is about the girl who is nowhere and never will be again, and all the other songs are the sort of mopey lyrics that run through your mind after Miss Right exits and before Miss Right II appears. Having said that, the mope sounds damn good against Osenga’s picking; this guy is a Guitar God in training. Behind him is an unobtrusive drummer and some keys. They are so unobtrusive, I can’t even read their names in the included booklet printed in teeny white letters on a light beige background.

But you won’t read the booklet either, you’ll just listen to the music and think about all those happy times you’ll never have again. Have a nice cry!
