There’s as many approaches to improv as there are teachers, and this group has learned well. The 3 it he superscript refers to the three principle stories that the troupe extracts from the audience in the preshow. A man has to put down his pet cat, a woman son won a major sporting champion ship, and another woman relates a roommate story from hell. Then three improvers play those roles, expand backs stories and begin tying them together to make a reasonably coherent narrative line. There’s a bit of a cheat here, the entire process is led by Nick Z, he sits it the front row, stopping scenes before they drag, and asking off the wall questions like “what’s the cat’s inner monolog” or “What if you didn’t hate her?” The result is a laugh provoking, nerve stimulating hour of faux storytelling, it never slows down, never gets vulgar and makes you smile on the way down the stairs.
This commentary was based on a technical rehearsal.
