It’s more experimental music from the German composer Burnt Freidman, this time in conjunction with the great Daniel Dodd-Ellis. This collection has a Sci-Fi / African feel to it, there’s a heavy layering of polyrhythmic percussion and weird electronic effects. The press material speaks of poetry in the songs, but words are few and seem only a minor part of this 11-track collection. True, “Test Maze” opens with a line from an action adventure movie but spends most of its time with an urgent rhythm line and sci-fi squeaks. Muttering appears on “Skies OK Blue” but conveys little imagery or information. “Cease to Matter” is perhaps the most poetic; there are two versions, each opening with “I carry my coffin on my head – wrapped in linen when I’m dead.” More words creep in later, but it’s an image that stays with you. The oddly named “Kidney One” holds a steady beat on a top hat with creepy underlayment of sound track experiments – it’s a jazz more suited for a sound track than a bar. As ambient collections go, this one is more intriguing than most, and gives the impression its part of a much larger project. It makes me want to say “Peace out.”
