There’s a plaint lilt to this Dutch jazz group. Their music floats along like a sunny day in a French New Wave comedy. Sometimes we just hear the instruments (“Sorbet”) , but occasionally Insa Rudolph’s voice takes us on a pleasant byway as she sings about nothing in particular
(“Smiling At You”). Dark moods descend into minor keys with “Nocturne”. Sepia sonic has an unusual sound for a jazz group, they have three flutes (including Bass and Alto- who knew?), a drum kit and a rotating flock of other jazz approved instruments. They claim a dislike of theory and genre, but they also never sink into the tuneless noodling of hard bebop. Rather, this is a plaint set of tunes you can hum along with while chilling out, doing house work, or commuting.
