Swami John Reis & The Blind Shake

Modern Surf Classics

Swami Records

Even after Jimi Hendrix declared the genre dead over 45 years ago, surf music continues to bubble up occasionally, probably because the style is so captivating. High energy reverb-drenched guitars combined with pounding drums can make any flyover state resident feel they can conquer the waves.

Apparently lost without a musical project brewing, John Reis (Rocket from the Crypt, Sultans, Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu) teamed up with Minneapolis trio The Blind Shake, to create Swami John Reis and the Blind Shake, in an attempt to bring surf music back to life once again.

Modern Surf Classics is a 13 track album that delivers just what the title says, heavily influenced by the Ventures, Dick Dale, and the soundtrack work of Davie Allen, mixed with a greasy garage rock sensibility. Kicking things off with “Sea Saw,” Modern Surf Classics is a set of rollicking surf tunes mixed with a sleazy saxophone and occasional piano sure to liven things up at your next luau, surf session, or strip show.
