5 Lesbians Eating a Quiche

For a “Woman’s Play” there’s one hell of a lot of testosterone up there. It’s Cold War Midcentury Modern tonight as the girls of the “Susan B. Anthony And More Words Than I Can Write Down Society” hold their annual meeting and quiche cook off. Rule number One: No meat in the quiche. It spoils the flavor. Everyone is in attendance, and a good thing we’re in a fall out shelter; today’s the day Dr. Strangelove picked to drop the Big One. But they have the quiche, and just enough dried food and plot points to last until the radiation does down in 4 years and the 1960 models are announced. All this is thanks to the hard work of President Vern (Carol Palumbo) but she forgot to stock the chicken coop and what WILL they do without eggs? Well, for starters they all come out one by one; Vern is first followed by lyrical Wren (Tara Rewis). The others fall into line until its time for the dynamically over acting Lulie (Tatiana Mendez); she has a big secret to reveal and I’ll just say she not been true to her school. Now it’s up to the photo snapping Dale (Allie Novell) to save the day from radiation sickness and time for emotionally fragile Ginny (Molly Wuerz) to save humanity from total annihilation. Good work girls, a guy couldn’t have done it better.

Fast and campy, this is a show packed with highly qualified Scream Queens and at times the show gets a little shrill. The quiche eating orgy scene was a highlight with Ms. Wuerz just lapping it up; and the audience humiliation scene shows no one is safe; if they offer you a name tag that says “Marge” fake a knee injury. I grew up with that ill defined threat of nuclear immolation, but then we believed Jesus would show up anytime as well with a bus for the great beyond so to me extinction was always twelve of one, half dozen of another. What propels this show is the cranked up camp and anachronistic sexual standards coupled with a high energy cast and excellent acting and direction. I suppose there’s some dreary message here somewhere, but I didn’t see it; this is just theater fun for fun’s sake.
