Antibalas: Live From the House of Soul

Daptone Records

The second installment of Daptone’s Live From the House of Soul showcases America’s premier proponents of Afrobeat music, Antibalas. Afrobeat is the rhythm-heavy blend of jazz, funk rock and traditional Nigerian music pioneered in the 1970’s by Fela Kuti. This is music designed for dancing all night on extended grooves and trippy instrumental soloing. Following Fela’s lead, Antibalas brings political critiques to the party on “Dirty Money” and “Ratcatcher”. There will be dancing at the revolution.

The Live From the House of Soul session again takes place in the backyard of the backyard of the Daptone house in Bushwick, Brooklyn. The performances are shot using over-saturated colors and disorienting angles that compliment the music’s trance inducing qualities. It’s probably as close as we’re going to get to the feeling of being at Afrika Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria back in 1977 (other than seeing the Broadway musical Fela!).
