No Quothing Ravens here; this adaptation takes are rather obscure Poe story and sets it on stage. Young Edgar Allen One (Hartman) is off to conquer boarding school the way a good Victorian would conquer the Arctic or Zimbabwe. He has swagger and ambition but soon hits speed bump: Edgar Allen Two (Ryan) appears. This one is somber and sober and can barely speak; he seems destined to operate a funeral parlor. The boy scuffle and scrap; Edgar One feels cheated by his rivals existence; He mystified Edgar Two with his vitriol. After a Harry Potter grade duel they team up to form The Order of the Birds; this gives Edgar One a path to his goal of ruling the boarding School. It’s not Zimbabwe, but it’s a start. Full of action, suspense, and Latin declensions, Edgar Allen keeps the creepy ending that you want in a good horror story but approaches it with fast paced action and comedy. A half pallet of bricks appears on stage; this traveling troupe must have a Home Depot lend lease card. Excellent sorry telling, excellent blocking (seriously) and a ukulele makes this a fresh and exhilarating romp.
